Does-a-tortoise-need-a-heat-lamp-at-night, if night time heat is required however, i would certainly advise against it coming from a light bulb. just as they would in the wild, tortoises require darkness in order to sleep properly. therefore if you do require a source of additional heat at night, i would opt for another method such as a ceramic heat emitter, or a heat mat.. Finding the best heat lamp for your tortoise. the biggest difference between most heat lamps is represented by the wattage of the heat bulb. most heat bulbs come in with three different wattages: 50 watts, 75 watts, and 100 watts., much of the confusion around tortoise lighting comes from the fact that whilst heat doesn’t necessarily need to comes from a light bulb, uv light is an essential too, and that does need to come from a light bulb. uv bulbs are very different beasts from heat lamps, giving off a dull blue hue rather than the sunny glow of a heat lamp..

In nature, hermanns tortoises get very cold at night at either end of the season (been there and monitored temps), so unless your temps stay cold with no lamps the following day, they will be fine. the lamp stimulate them to wake and carry on as normal. burrowing into a good depth of coir allows good thermoregulation.
