At Toys R Us, where it’s always beginning to look a lot like the holidays, the difficult job of trying to predict which playthings will be in hottest demand this season is finally complete.

Toys R Us, which traditionally draws some of the biggest attention to its choices, has picked a list this year that’s so varied that it would draw Santa to distraction, from a life-like toy tiger to one of the latest Nerf blasters.

The list is studded with toys that it says will be exclusive to its stores. It includes toys like Furreal Roarin’ Ivory, the Playful Tiger; the Power Rangers Ninja Steel Lion Fire Fortress Zord and the Power Wheels Boomerang.

Walmart, Amazon and Target have also released their top picks, showing how heated the competition is to capture the attention of buyers ahead of the the all-important holiday season when some retailers earn as much as half of their annual revenue.

“Whether you’re into driving vehicles, whether you’re into movies, we’ve got everything on the list, whoever you might be,” says Richard Barry, the toy chain’s executive vice president and global chief merchandising officer.

Spin Master had the hottest toy of the 2016 holidays with the release of Hatchimals. The company now thinks it’s got the season’s “it” gift for 2017 as well. They’re called … Hatchimals. Time

At a time when traditional retailers are trying to make the in-store experience more exciting, efficient and convenient to attract shoppers who increasingly prefer to shop online, Toys R Us is rolling out an app this year that will allow shoppers to type in the desired toy along with their ZIP code. They’ll then get a store map that shows the aisle and exact spot where they can pick up the gadget, game or doll.

Toys R Us has also launched its holiday layaway program and is waiving the usual $5 fee to open up an account.
